Commission outlines election timetable
In an interview published on 10 February, an acting chief election commissioner explained that all major activities for the March 5 House of Representatives election have been divided into phases and are being implemented according to a pre-approved calendar. The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) has already finalised the electoral timetable, including deadlines for candidate nominations, voter roll publication, and training of polling officials.
Logistics and polling infrastructure
Officials said that the commission has been working continuously since the last election cycle, updating voter rolls and reviewing polling locations. With 275 seats in the House of Representatives, 165 to be elected through first-past-the-post and 110 through proportional representation, the ECN has been focused on ensuring that each constituency has adequate polling centres and trained staff. The commission has indicated that procurement of ballot papers, ballot boxes, and other sensitive materials is underway and is being monitored centrally.
Security coordination with government
The ECN emphasised that election security is the constitutional responsibility of the Government of Nepal, but that a joint operations mechanism is in place to allow close coordination. Representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the four main security agencies are working through a Joint Election Operations Centre to monitor field conditions and support local security committees. According to officials, this structure is intended to enable real-time coordination and quick responses if incidents arise during the campaign or on polling day.
