Security planning
Earlier timelines released by the Election Commission indicated that joint election operation centres and specialised police communication units would operate through the election period. Security chiefs have reportedly assured full cooperation, including the deployment of temporary (Myadi) police to supplement regular forces.
Balancing security and rights
The challenge for security planners is to provide visible deterrence against intimidation, booth capture and violence, without creating an atmosphere of fear that could discourage turnout. This is especially sensitive in areas that experienced heavy-handed policing during protests in recent years.
Voter perspective
For voters, the credibility of security arrangements will be judged not just on the absence of violence, but also on whether all parties and communities feel they can campaign and vote without discrimination. Clear hotlines for complaints and rapid responses to incidents will be critical tests on and around March 5.
