Press Council monitoring under way

The Press Council Nepal has stepped up its monitoring of election coverage across print, broadcast, online and social media. During the period when the election code of conduct has been active, it has reviewed hundreds of items and issued warnings to media outlets and some non-media actors for breaching professional and legal standards.

Typical violations include publishing unverified allegations of vote-buying, amplifying hate speech from campaign rallies without context, and presenting misleading graphics that confuse voters about polling dates or procedures.

Reminder of shared responsibility

The council and Election Commission have jointly reminded editors that competitive breaking-news coverage should not come at the expense of accuracy and fairness. They argue that sensational or one-sided reporting can unintentionally serve as a vector for disinformation.

Media organisations are being urged to strengthen internal fact-checking, clearly label opinion as distinct from news and provide space for corrections when genuine mistakes occur.
